At the first of this week, we heard news that one of the guests at Jeff Street had gotten hit by a car and was in the hospital. This is like the 3rd time someone from Jeff Street has gotten hit by a car. I never thought about it before but I guess if you are walking the streets alot..your chances of getting hit by a car increase.
Anyways…my friend Brittany and I went to see our friend Jim in the hospital. He had shattered some bones in his leg and was having surgery the next week. After talking and visiting with him for a while, we left. As we were going down the hall we saw another one of our friends from Jeff Street. I asked her what she was doing there. She said she was there to see one of her friends. I asked if it was Jim and she said yes.
As Brittany and I walked down the hall to the elevators to leave, we started talking about how neat it is how folks become so close at the shelter. For alot of them, Jeff Street is their community. Alot of them have been abandoned by family, or never really had much of a family to begin with. They become each others family and support network.

I have seen countless times when a person has come into Jeff St, homeless for the first time, and someone will take them under their wing and tell them everything they need to know about how to get help and where to go. Just the other day I saw two newer ladies who I’ve seen together alot, talking and laughing. I talked to them and asked them how long they had been friends. They said they had only known each other 2 days. One of the ladies said that she had just become homeless and the other had befriended her. It’s neat to see how they look out for each other. Often times when someone acquires a place to live, they want to come back to Jeff St to see friends. Just some thoughts and things that I have noticed here…
