Unexpected Blessings

I am always amazed at the presence of God that is felt at Jeff Street.  I constantly see him move in the lives of others and in my own life.  Going in to this summer, there is no way I could have foreseen the wonderful blessings God would fill my life with.  First, a couple that may seem silly but are important to me: I am becoming quite the chef and also quite the pool shark.  (disclaimer: both of those are extreme overstatements, but you understand where I’m coming from.)  Yesterday, I helped cook lunch for the residents and cooked dinner for my teammates.   I believe I burned a total of  8 out of 10 fingertips touching hot pots and pans, but that’s okay because the food turned out pretty good.  A real reason I enjoy cooking is the fellowship I have with my team when we eat together and the great times we have when we invite residents to eat at our apartment.  In regards to pool, a couple days ago I beat one of my new friends here at Jeff Street five games to two.  In reality, three of those games were won because he knocked the 8 ball in too early.  I am in fact pretty terrible at getting my balls in the pockets.  However, I enjoy the time spent playing pool and getting to know the residents better.

Another blessing for which I am thankful is how awesome it is when a resident or day shelter guest opens up and really allows me to carry on a conversation with them.  I have met some of the most interesting people here who come from all different walks of life.  We carry on conversations ranging from topics such as art to sports to philosophy.  I am especially thankful for the times when spirituality comes up and I am able to share how blessed I am to know God and the liberating message he presents in His Son Jesus Christ.  Often I am ministered to by people who have such great faith in the face of great adversity.  Other times, I know Christ uses me to offer hope to some who really need it.

I know that my time this summer will be an unforgettable experience.  I look forward to God’s continuing blessings in this place and will continue to stand amazed at how wonderful He really is.
